Congratulations to all the riders who started and completed the AUDAX 400km ride on March 17th! That was by far the largest group ever to start an AUDAX 400km ride in Singapore and it is great to see the enthusiasm for long distance cycling. The next Singapore AUDAX ride is a AUDAX 200km ride on April 21, 2018. You can sign up here
More details will be released on the AUDAX 200km in the near future.
Steven Hon once again set new standards by completing the 400km distance in just slightly over 15 hours. That is usually the time for a 300km AUDAX. Congratulations Steven…you continuously raise the bar.
Given we had an early 600km in 2018 this 400km ride also delivered the first batch of Super Randonneurs (SR). To qualify for SR status you need to complete 200, 300, 400 and 600km rides in the same year. Still plenty of riding left in the year to complete the SR series.
Special thanks to Mukyo of Team Audax-SG-ID an alliance from SongongBrothers and Growes-SG-ID for his write up. I had to trim it down a bit as it was so exciting and long but in general all of this excitement is in his own words. Congratulations Mukyo to you and your whole team for achieving Super Randonneur status so early in the year! Mukyo will receive a pair of Singapore AUDAX socks for sharing his story.
Wow… can’t believe it, we really did AUDAX400km. Very special deep down emotionally.
And for most of our team members this is our Super Randonneur ride as well.
This post mostly tells the story of how our team was setup and grown throughout AUDAX rides.
We are basically just a bit above of what some average riders are, in terms of individual strength.
That is why none of us fully confident that we can take on the bigger AUDAX rides.
Hence the need to not just setup an AUDAX group, but we purposely built an AUDAX Team.
The group is built upon riders which technically able to tackle AUDAX200km rides solo and self-supporting.
Added with common goal and mindset alignment, also pure detailed strategic planning.
The Goal is simple, to become a Super Randonneur.
The Mindset is common, is about how we can leverage each other equally to maximize the success rate.
And the strategic planning is there to ensure that all members chipped in, own the plan and execute the ride with discipline.
We learned this in a hard way in AUDAX 600km and improve it amazingly well in AUDAX300km.
And once again we proved it works superb in AUDAX 400km, the toughest one.
We started assembling the availability of the team members about 2 Weeks before the ride.
And on the week of the rides, the team is finalized down from 6 to 5 riders.
We finally use below numbers for those long never ending hills of Malaysia since Audax300,
they matched our riding profile well.
During the ride we execute according to the plan as much as possible.
And reasonably pace up before the sun rises to buy more time.
We arrived in JB Shell rather on time, but a bit dragging to 06:18 as we wait for our Morning Pray at the mosque.
We roll out from through Skudai toward PekanNenas, we tried new things in this 400km ride.
We do paceline role every 5min or when speed dropped down below 30kph.
Morale is high the sun is low we clocked in as much as possible time saving, our avg speed is still higher than 33kph here.
Time is kept well, rehydration within 15mins, and we continue roll to Petronas Bukit Batu, all up until here is considered flat.
Strategy is still to accumulate time. and we actually arrived almost 30mins than planned ETA. Avg Speed still above 32kph here.
We know that after Bukit Batu, things will get tougher, sun is getting high and the climb will start to be painful.
Multiple climb passing by Layang Layang, what kept us going is that we know lunch is waiting after these hills.
Thinking of juicy KFC Hot and Spicy meat and cool aircon to get away from this blistering sun gives a strong motivation.
Eventually we decided McD Kluang though, as it is nearer to for refill shopping.
We met Dan’s group and share table for a while, very helpful as we really don’t feel like climbing stairs there multiple times 🙂
On our way out, we also met Lyn, at that time we didn’t realize the mishap on her ride towards Kluang, sorry Lyn.. 🙁
The thing with Kluang is, after that it is always blazing hot, in AUDAX 300km, we were lucky to get showered awhile after that, so we kind of hope the same luck. But alas !!! what we had was fully hot melting sun burning us on hilly ride towards Bandar Tenggara.
We can’t make it rain, so we can only smile for each other, keeping our morale as high as possible as a team, supporting each other.
By the time we reached Petronas Bandar Tenggara, we literally melted away. It was so hot, amazingly we kept our 30mins lead time.
We know that we are going to use this time saving soon, as the day does not seem to show us any mercy.
We do our day prays and showered wet our body with water before rolling out. Keeping the timing and saving as planned.
We get so much weaker throughout this segment towards Ulu Tiram, burned to crisp, the peloton starts to stretch.
We know that the best thing to do here is to stay strong, be strong towards each others, wait and support when needed.
By the time we reached Ulu Tiram, all our body system were completely wasted already, super bonked.
We did keep our stop plan amazingly intact, no additional, but we decided that we should have dinner here.
As otherwise we won’t have enough energy to cross back to SG.
265km and the distance gap towards 400km has never looked so far away now. at least we know the hills are over by now.
We dashed through the remaining of JB towards immigration and made team decision at the crossing border.
That we will just accumulate the remaining 100km by doing flat inner Seletar loop. instead of Half RTI towards dreadful TMCR.
Taking Admiralty – Yishun path towards Seletar, we stop by at Seletar Airport for our, supposing, last refill break.
Oh boy… did we get things really wrong thinking that the remaining 60km can be done by simply looping, the wind is not light at all, and we are really dried up to the last drop of energy left, until we can’t even maintain 25kph paceline there.
We had to take a rest break, and things get really demoralizing by then.
We tried to continue after the break, a loop? and things actually gets even worse.
Energy was sapped by mother nature until we decided that we had to eat again.
Never have I seen eating two bread and the carbs just washed away somewhere else, dunno where… Last supper at Jalan Kayu
Last 40km, we stretch as much as we can, that Pineapple Fried Rice, Chicken Rice, Coconut Drink really lasted only 1hr.
We break off at last 20-10km and went home separately. We believe fully by that time, no matter what, all of us would be able to finish.
Those staying nearby Seletar continue the loop there, some went back towards west side.
As for me I loop nearby Balestier, met a bro doing his last 15km on the same loop,
before I went on to Novena to close the loop in as per my usual AUDAXritual. 400 devastating km done.
And that is our journey towards AUDAX Super Randonneur 2018.
Hope that this sharing is useful for likeminded group of people, to setup their own AUDAX ride team, to increase their success rate.
