Another thrilling AUDAX 200km ride this weekend with some new faces and the return of some Singapore AUDAX legends. The 200km group was a bit smaller than usual with people traveling for summer, doing crazy things like RAAM or just plain taking a break from spending the entire day on a bike. Many new faces which was always encouraging and great to have Ling Ling on-board to represent the sole woman rider on this weekend’s ride. It was also nice to have a visiting rider join us from Thailand once again!
The one common occurrence this weekend was that rides do not always go as planned. A puncture on the initial fast stretch of highway slowed the group down and a broken derailleur sent one rider home in a car. Thanks to those who helped fix the puncture and get the group rolling again and to Kelvin for driving the derailed rider home. Other than those minor incidents the riders just had to face the weather and the Kulai hills to manage this 200km ride.
Almost immediately the group broke in two from the start with a faster and slower group. It pretty well remained that way for most of the day.
It was around four or five years ago we were doing an AUDAX 300km ride and a guy named Bergtor showed up. Bergtor was from Norway and an incredibly strong guy which was evident by the fact that he pulled the entire group for more than 260 of the 300 kilometers. In the end he did not even look tired. He mentioned he had not been riding as much as he liked lately so we would be safe for this weekend. The one thing we did not count on however was another Strongman from Norway being on his first AUDAX ride. Stian Simonsen is fairly new to Singapore but he managed the heat and the hills very strongly towing the fast group most of the way. He stated that his goal was to ‘blow up and take a taxi home’ but fortunately he never hit that point but managed to blow many other riders apart. Stian easily takes the Lundy Worker Award for an insane amount of front time at a blazing pace (average speed over the 200km was 33+km/hour). At the end over beers he did not even look tired.
The first group was dominated by the duo from Norway pulling the group over the hills and back to Singapore safely. In addition to Team Norway, Pete Whitfield also did a fantastic job pulling most of the group safely back the last 25km or so…which were extremely difficult. He kept looking back apologizing for slowing our average overall ride speed at the end but nobody was able to get the energy to move ahead of him to pull as he towed at 34km/hour until the very end. Amiably named ‘Ketchup Man’ by David Kolpak, Pete takes the JFT AUDAX Spirit Award for towing us back as a group and for reigniting Kolpak’s singing career with the release of ‘Ketchup Man’- which is sung in the same tone as Elton John’s famous song Rocket Man! Prizes for both winners are AUDAX socks. Pace was too fast to see any smiles!
Epic ride with varying speeds. Note the 600km on July 4/5 will be done in Eurodax style – we will stay together as one group and will use it to train for night time riding, sleep deprivation and self-control and management. The original form of the AUDAX style involves riding in strict group formation at a steady pace set by a road captain. The group attempts to maintain a pace of the slowest rider with stronger riders doing the front time. The route is pre-planned with designated stopping points. The goal of the AUDAX 600km in July is to finish inside the prescribed time limit with all members of the group present. A support vehicle is allowed to follow each group of riders.
